All you need to know about Microneedling!
Microneedling has gained popularity over the past few years and for good reason! This simple service has a long list of amazing outcomes. Microneedling has been shown to improve the appearance of skin by addressing fine lines, diminishing the appearance of scarring and improving skin texture just to name a few!
What exactly is microneedling, and is it the right treatment for you?
In this post, we’ll break down everything you need to know about microneedling, from how it works to the benefits and potential risks.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a skin treatment that uses a device with tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. These controlled injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, which includes the production of collagen and elastin—two proteins that are essential for healthy, youthful skin. The treatment is performed using a hand-held device called a derma-pen. The derma-pen has a one-time-use sterile tip that houses a dozen tiny needles that move in and out rapidly as the pen glides over the skin.
What are the benefits of Microneedling?
Microneedling offers a range of skin benefits, making it a popular choice for individuals seeking non-surgical treatments. Here are some of the top reasons people turn to microneedling:
- Improves Skin Texture and Tone: By stimulating collagen production, microneedling can help smooth out rough texture, minimize pores, and improve overall skin tone.
- Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles: As the skin produces more collagen, it can help fill in fine lines and wrinkles, giving you a more youthful appearance.
- Fades Scars: Microneedling can be particularly effective for treating acne scars, stretch marks, and other forms of scarring by encouraging the regeneration of new skin cells.
- Improves Skin Elasticity: Collagen is key to skin’s firmness and elasticity. Regular microneedling can help tighten loose or sagging skin, particularly in areas like the jawline and under the eyes.
- Boosts Product Absorption: After microneedling, your skin can absorb skincare products more effectively, which can enhance the benefits of serums, moisturizers, and other treatments.
- Encourages hair growth: Microneedling has been shown to be effective in treating hair loss, particularly androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness).
- Minimal Downtime: While you may experience some redness and mild irritation, most people can return to their daily activities within 24-48 hours.
Before your appointment…
If you are unsure if microneedling is the right service for you, we recommend booking a consultation to discuss your needs. Your service provider can answer any questions you may have and offer other suggestions if you decide that microneedling is not the answer to your skin concerns.
You will need to stop using skin care products that may contain retinoids at least 1-3 days prior to your appointment. A six month wait time is required following the use of Accutane (Isotretinoin).
A pre-care information form will be sent to you that goes into detail on how to best prepare for your appointment and advises on any contraindications to treatment.
The day of the appointment…
The process of microneedling typically takes around 30-60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Here’s what you can expect:
- Consultation: Before beginning the treatment, your practitioner will assess your skin and discuss your goals, medical history, and any potential contraindications.
- Preparation: It is very important that your skin is clean. Your service provider will thoroughly cleanse the treatment area in order to reduce risk of infection. To minimize discomfort, you will be offered a numbing cream which will be applied to your skin about 20-30 minutes before the procedure.
- The service provider will apply hyaluronic acid to allow the pen to glide over the skin and further encourage the healing properties of your skin. The device uses fine needles to create thousands of tiny punctures in the skin’s surface.
Does it hurt?
Microneedling can be mildly uncomfortable, especially over the boney areas such as the forehead. You will be offered the option to have numbing cream applied prior to the procedure but many clients will tolerate it well without any topical anesthetic.
What you need to know about aftercare…
After the procedure, your skin may appear slightly red or flushed, similar to a mild sunburn. You will be sent home with aftercare products to help minimize discomfort and promote healing. You will be advised to avoid direct sun exposure, use gentle skincare products, and apply sunscreen regularly as your skin heals.
What are the risks?
While microneedling is generally considered safe, there are some risk factors to consider. Your skin has been punctured which can leave you susceptible to infection. It is very important to follow the aftercare instructions to avoid any complications. You should call your doctor immediately if you notice more severe side effects such as bruising, bleeding, peeling, and infection.
When can I expect to see the results of the treatment?
It may take several weeks for the full effects of microneedling to become visible, as collagen production and skin regeneration happen gradually. For optimal results, a series of treatments (usually 3-6) spaced about a month apart is recommended.
If you’re looking for a treatment that stimulates collagen and enhances the appearance of your skin without the need for surgery, microneedling may be a great option to explore.
