Now that the cooler weather is upon us, you may notice that your skin is having a difficult time adjusting to the change in temperature. With the colder weather and dry air, our skin often becomes dry and prone to irritation. In addition, most of us don’t get as much fresh fruit and veggies during these months which can also leave our skin lacking in luster.
It may seem like you are fighting a losing battle against the elements, but we are here to tell you that there are a few simple things you can do to ensure your skin does not suffer.
1. CHECK YOUR PRODUCTS
The skincare products that served you well during the summer months may not be what your skin needs going into the Fall and Winter. In the summer months your skin may have required products to help balance oils that resulted from increased perspiration, humidity, and a warmer climate. You may need to look into a cleanser that is more calming to your skin and a heavier moisturizer to help combat the dry air. Of course, everyone’s skin is different and it’s advised to consult with a professional for advice on what products are best for you.
2. SPF IS NECESSARY ALL YEAR LONG
We think about sunscreen in the summer when we out in the scorching sun but the sun is damaging to our skin in the winter months as well. Sun damage increases the risk of skin cancer, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and premature aging. Make sure you are protected by wearing SPF daily.
3. PROTECT YOUR LIPS
The cold air does a number on the delicate tissue around our mouths. Keeping a moisturizing lip balm handy is an easy way to ensure you don’t end up with dry, flakey, or even cracked lips. A good lip product will provide a protective barrier against the harsh elements as well as nourish your lips with the nutrients that you need to keep you smile healthy and happy.
4. EXFOLIATE
A lot of us tend to avoid exfoliating in the colder months since our skin already feels irritated. Don’t avoid exfoliation! Sloughing off the dead layers of skin cells not only prevents your skin from looking dull but it allows your moisturizing products to penetrate into the skin more efficiently. This is even more necessary when our skin is in desperate need of moisture due to the dry air.
5. AVOID SCORCHING HOT BATHS/SHOWERS
It’s cold outside and we are longing for heat but by scorching our skin with the hottest shower, we are worsening the dry condition of our skin. Do yourself and your skin a favour by keeping the water warm and not hot.
6. INVEST IN A HUMIDIFIER
Running a humidifier in your home will decrease the dryness of the air and your skin will thank you! You will see the benefit in the delicate skin around your face, your cuticles and experience a boost to your general health and wellbeing.
7. BOOK A FACIAL
Seeking a professional treatment during these harsher months can help keep your skin looking vibrant and healthy. Our estheticians can assess the condition of your skin and customize a facial that suits your skin type and needs. They can also make recommendations on what products would work best for you in this season. A facial will also provide a deep cleanse and rejuvenation that will allow products to be absorbed more efficiently. Ideally a facial every 4-5 weeks will keep your looking fresh. You can book your facial right here on our website!
